Sir Ralph Shelton, 14th Lord of Shelton, was born in 1315 in England.  He built the Old Shelton Hall (probably in the mid 1300’s), a fortified castle, and St. Mary’s Church at Shelton, Norfolk.  He married Anne Burgulion.  At his mother’s death in 1334, Sir Ralph Shelton was Lord of the Shelton Manor.  He was eighteen years old.  Through the marriage of his first wife, Anne, he became heir to the great estates of Sir Ralph Burgulion, of Great Snoring, Suffolk, England, and of Rediston.  He was also Lord of the Manor of Brent (Burnt) Elleigh in Suffolk.   Ralph next married Joan de Plais, daughter of Sir John de Plais, in 1346 in England.  Joan died in 1405.  Ralph fought in King Edward III’s own company at the Battle Crecy  and was knighted for helping save the life of the King’s eldest son, Edward (1330-1376).  Edward was known as the Black Prince because he wore black armor when he led part of the English forces in this battle on August 25, 1346, at age 16.  The Battle of Crecy was a great English victory in the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453), a succession of wars between England and France.  It was one of the first battles in which the English soldiers used gunpowder.  It was won largely, however, because the French in their heavy armor were no match for the English archers with their longbows and steel-tipped arrows.  The English had only 19,000 men but they destroyed over half of the French army of more than 60,000 men.  Sir Ralph also won high favor at Poitiers ten years later when the English again routed the French.  Ralph and Joan had at least four children:  Ralph, 15th Lord of Shelton, John, William, 18th Lord of Shelton, and Robert.  Ralph, 15th Lord of Shelton, was born about 1330 in England.  John was born about 1337 in England.  William Shelton, 18th Lord of Shelton, was born in England.  He married Catherine Barrett in England.  Catherine died in 1456.  William and Catherine were buried in Shelton Church, Shelton, Norfolk, England.  Robert was born about 1340 in England.  Sir Ralph, 14th Lord of Shelton died November 17, 1358 at age 43.  Both he and wife Joan were buried in Shelton Church, Shelton, Norfolk, England, and the brass effigy of this warrior adorned the floor.  The figure was described as being in complete armor, having Saracens head couped (an honorable memorial of the Crusades.  The crest with the following inscription was placed at the head:  “Perez pour l’ame due Monsieur Raulf de Shelton le pere iidis (?) Maistre de ceste Ville qui mousot (?) xvii soin de Novembre Vande grau MCCCLVIII, le plus le femme in fille due Monsieur de Plais de corps du guel gist ici Dieu ed son ame ait merci.”  Written in old French, the inscription loosely means:  “Pray for the soul of Sir Ralph de Shelton the ideal father and master of this city who died the evening of November 17, 1358.  His wife, the daughter of Monsieur de Plais, also lies here.”

and King Henry VIII were the parents of Elizabeth I (b. 1533; d. 1603), who became Queen of England in 1558.  Elizabeth I never married.  Sir John and Lady Anne Boleyn Shelton were great-uncle and –aunt to Elizabeth I.  As a Protestant, Princess Elizabeth was the center of suspicion by her half-sister Queen Mary I (daughter of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon).  The Sheltons were very good to Elizabeth and when she was still a princess they received her into their home at Shelton.  On occasions they even hid her within the tower of Shelton Church.  She had her own pew in the church.  When Elizabeth was crowned, she summoned her aunt’s family to London.  They lived with her in the Palace, and their descendants lived at the Court for her entire reign.  Sir John was Governor of the Household of the King.  Lady Anne was governess to Princess (later Queen) Mary.  It was this John Shelton who glazed the east window of St. Mary’s Church in Shelton, Norfolk, England, with effigies of himself and his wife.  In devotional attitude, each figure is covered with a surcoat of the respective arms.  Sir John had

the grant of Carrow Abbey, Norfolk, where he displayed a very fine collection of Shelton Armorial Glass.  Carrow Abbey was founded in 1146 when King Stephen granted a piece of land by charter to two nuns.  The Benedictine Nunnery was built overlooking the Wensum River in Norfolk.  The Nunnery occupied an important position in medieval times and carried on its work for nearly 400 years until about 1539, when Henry VIII commanded the Dissolution of the Monasteries.  The Prioress’ House (the northern wing of Carrow Abbey) fortunately escaped destruction, having been given to Sir John.  It had been built by the last of the Lady Prioresses, Isabell Wygun, earlier in Henry’s reign, presumably on the site of an older house.  The parlor was paneled throughout in oak and the guest room was finely proportioned with oak ceiling and carved spandrels.  Sir John and Lady Anne had at least nine children:  John, 22nd Lord of Shelton, Margaret, Ralph, Thomas, Anne, Mary, Gabriella, Emma, and Elizabeth.  Sir John was High Sheriff of Norfolk, England in 1504.  He was knighted in 1509, and was present as Knight of the Bath at the Coronation of Henry VIII.  Sir John died in 1539 in Shelton, Norfolk, England about age 67.  He was buried in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  Lady Anne died on January 6, 1556 in Carrow Abbey, Norwich, Norfolk, England at age 80.  She was buried in Carrow Church, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  Son John, 22nd Lord of Shelton, was born about 1504 in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  Margaret was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  She was called “Pretty Madge” and “Cousin Madge.”  She was an attendant at Court of Queen Anne Boleyn and was commanded by her to distract the attentions of Henry when he was making love to Jane Seymour.  Margaret married Thomas Wodehouse in England.  Sir Ralph was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  He was granted all land and appurtenances of John Amerye and of the Monastery of Brodsley in Worcestershire.  Ralph and his uncle William Shelton, receiver for the King, had large grants in Worcestershire and Warwickshire in 1539 to 1547.  Ralph married Amy Wodehouse in England.  Thomas was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  He was Gentleman Porter of Her Majesty’s Tower.  Thomas married _____ Appleyard in England.  Anne was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  She married Sir Edmund Knevett in England.  Edmund was born in England.  Anne next married Christopher Coote, Esquire, in England.  Mary was born about 1512 in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  She married Sir Anthony Heveningham, son of Sir John Heveningham and Alice Shelton, in England.  Anthony died in 1558 in England.  They had at least one son, Sir Arthur Heveningham.  She next married Philip Appleyard, Esquire, in England.  They had no children.  Gabriella was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  Emma was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  Elizabeth was born in Shelton, Norfolk, England.

Sir Ralph Shelton, 26th Lord of Shelton, was born on November 1, 1560 in Shelton, Norfolk, England.  He was the third son of Sir Ralph Shelton and Mary Wodehouse.  He was knighted at Theobald’s, Warwickshire, England in 1607.  According to records in the British Museum, he was Minister to Spain, Secretary to the Prince of Wales, and one of the entourage of the Earl of Carlisle on the trip to France in 1612 to arrange for the marriage of Charles I with the sister of the French King.  It was this Sir Ralph who held the Norfolk and Suffolk estates in 1606 (succeeding his brother John) prior to the sale of Shelton.  Ralph married Jane West, daughter of William West and Elizabeth Strange, in England.  In an account of his marriage to Jane he is given as Ralph Sheldon, Esquire of Beoley, Worcestershire.  Jane was born about 1558 in England.  They had at least two children:  James, and Thomas.  James, Gentleman, was born about 1585 in England.  Thomas was born about 1588 in England.  He invented the first process of shorthand in 1630.  This was used by Samuel Pepys in his “Diary.”  Thomas was the author of the best translation of “Don Quixote” (1612) which was published in 1620.  Sir Ralph was a member of the Second and Third London Companies.  In all the Colonial records of the Second Charter granted to the London Company, May 23, 1609, the names of Sir Ralph Shelton of Norfolk, England, a Captain Shelton, and a James Shelton, Gentleman, appear.  The Second London Company sailed under Lord de la Warr with nine ships and 500 people.  The admiral’s ship was named “Sea Venture.”  They landed in America in 1610.  A charter was granted to the Third London Company in 1611.  As a Member of Parliament, Sir Ralph signed the petition circulated there by the Company in 1610.  There is nothing to indicate Sir Ralph ever came to America to live.  If so, he returned to England; but his son James Shelton, Gentleman, came with Lord de la Warr in June 1610, remained, and founded the Shelton family of America in Virginia.  Sir Ralph was killed in 1628 at the Isle of Rhe, France at age 68.

 **********

James Shelton, Gentleman, was born about 1585 in England.  He came to Virginia from England with his kinsman Lord de la Warr in June 1610.  He was a member of the first courts from 1619 to 1624 and was a resident of Jamestown, Virginia in 1620.James married Anne Hebert in England.  Anne was born in 1588 in England and died in 1639 at age 51.  James and Anne had at least 10 children:  James, Stephen, Joane, John, William, Thomas, Robert, George, Richard, and Ralph.  James was born about 1600 in England.  He married Eleanor West.  Eleanor was born about 1600 in England.  They had at least one son, Peter.  James lived in Warwickshire, England.  After the death of his father he went with his family to Bermuda as heir to his father’s estate.  James died on May 28, 1668 in Bermuda about age 68.  Stephen was born about 1602 in England.  He married Anne West.  In 1634 Stephen owned the ship “Captain John Stone.”  He was one of the earliest justices of Accomac, Baltimore County, Maryland and was on record in Northampton County as Captain Stephen Charlton.  He died in 1654 about age 52.  Joane was born in England and married _____ Hall.  John was born about 1603 in England.  He was living in Shadwell, England in 1639.  He was a ship owner and merchant and in 1683 he came to South Carolina, where he was given 300 acres of land.  John died on August 15, 1690 in Bermuda about age 88.  He was buried in Bermuda.  William was born about 1605 in England.  He wrote his will November 20, 1640, in the East Indies, while aboard his ship “The William.”  He died shortly thereafter at sea, where he was buried.  The will, filed in London, named his mother, Anne; brother John of Shadwell, executor; and sister Joane Hall.  Thomas was born about 1606 in England.  Robert was born after 1606 in England.  George was born about 1607 in England.  Richard was born in 1610 and died in 1701 at age 91.  He married Susannah.  He had land grants in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.  In 1642 James Shelton, Gentleman, was a member of the later court in Jamestown.  He and his father were members of the London Company.  James had a land grant on the Potomac October 16, 1650.  Part of “Currioman” Westmoreland County, Virginia, was one of the original land grants of James.  This grant was probably taken up by his Thomas Shelton, who died in Cecil County, Maryland in 1650.  James moved to Bermuda, where he also had large land grants.  He is named on the “Partial List of Families in America Entitled to Bear Arms.”  The illustration of the plate he used, however, is not given.  Coats of Arms were, in the Middle Ages, the distinctive signs of the “gentleman” in English society.  The rigid etiquette observed in the county records of Virginia for the 17th century showed that these distinctions prevailed in Virginia as well.  None at this early period assumed the name of “gentleman” without claim to arms, and the bearer of arms was a “gentleman” according to the original definition of Sir Edward Coke:  “It has been generally agreed by English and American writers that in America the use of arms by a family pervious to the Revolution may be taken as evidence that this family had a right to use thereof.”  An English coach painter came to New England about 1750 and furnished a number of families with arms which have since been discovered bogus.  Virginia was the especial scene of Thomas Jefferson, who, as the apostle of democracy, strove to do away with all distinctions in society.  When Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, England for the first time since 1485 was not under the rule of the Tudors.  In that year the English crown passed from Elizabeth I to James VI of Scotland.  He was known as King James I and was the first ruler of the House of Stuart.  In 1606 King James I granted a charter for the settlement of South Virginia to an association of “noblemen, gentlemen, and merchants.”  The association was known as the London Company, or the Virginia Company of London, since most of its members lived in London.  Some of the Sheltons belonged to this company.  Some Sheltons also owned their own ships and did a large trading business with Bermuda and America.  The Governor of Bermuda, Captain Wodehouse, was a kinsman of Sir Ralph Shelton, whose mother was a Wodehouse.  Sir John Shelton, son of James Shelton, Gentleman, is given on a list of ship owners and merchants who made large sales of commodities to the Virginia planters.
